Happy New Year!

2022 is here! I hope it has been a good beginning for you. It certainly has been better than I imagined. I went to the Malmö light show with a friend. It was pretty cool. Lots of nice light displays. The above photo is one of my favorites.

I celebrated with friends Susanne, Mia and Katarina in Karlstad. We talked, laughed, ate, and played games. No better way to ring in the new year than with wonderful friends. I haven’t stayed up past midnight for a long time.

Susanne and I went ice skating across the street from her apartment the next day. Her daughter’s skates fit perfectly. I had so much fun and I was pleased I was able to stand up on the ice. It has been 20 plus years since I have skated. Neither one us fell and it was tremendous fun.

I learned a card game with Susanne, Emilia, (Susanne’s daughter) and her sambo Ludwig. I did not win. Susanne had a great start with 3 wins in a row but Ludwig took the win. It was nice spending time together. Emilia happens to work for a bank. I will finally get help with my bank account! The other bank must have misplaced my paperwork or maybe I wrote the telephone number wrong. Nonetheless all is going to work out.

The train ride was great. Saw a bit of scenery in the beginning of each way of my trip. It was nice to relax, read, listen to music and even took a little cat nap. Lots of people on the train heading to see family friends and more on the return.

Back at my centrum apartment I got things ready to move. I am amazed how many things I have accumulated in just over a month. Food and Christmas items for the most part. The sister missionaries helped me move in which made things so much more fun.

This apartment has a separated bedroom and 51 square meters which is roughly 548 square feet. I had to get new bedding, mattress topper, pillows and towels but it makes it cozy to be able to decorate as I want. IKEA is a 3 min bus ride away. I figured I could afford to go there and get all I needed. Took a taxi home which could accommodate the mattress top but what a nice driver. He was super helpful.

Walked in a different part of town on my last day living in town. There are so many interesting places. This town just always amazes me and always has something to explore. And now I have another area to explore as well. I am utterly exhausted but it feels good.

  1. Gott Nytt År!
Nice to read about your life in Sweden. You have met some nice friends and surely been busy exploring and making your apartment look very nice. I hope you will enjoy the new place that you will be moving in to as well. Further to centrum but I know busses are easy to use.
Here we have had full winter, lots of snow and crazy on the roads with tons of accidents, closed mountain pass and people do not prepare their cars before getting out on the roads and freeways. We have studded tires and chains if needed.
We have driven to Samish Island several times. Our house at the island is fully heated but we still had frozen faucets in the outside, frozen drain in the bathtub and shower, but with hot water etc it is all open now and no busted pipes. I rent out the house on Airbnb so it is important that everything is working well. I am going up there again tomorrow to check. It is warmer now and the snow is melting, but it was wonderful to look out and see winter wonderland. Greetings from Seattle.

    1. Glad things did not go badly with frozen pipes. It is so unusual to have the cold so long but it does happen. Maybe when I come back I can rent your place. 😄 love the water view. Gott Nytt År.

  2. Your apartment looks so inviting. Not sure what a ‘separated’ bedroom is. Maybe it means it’s off to the side but no door. Anyway I’m glad you’re settled in an area where you wanted to be.

    1. I actually have a bedroom and it has a door! The others have not.

  3. Congratulations on your ice skating adventure. I tried it a few years back at Pt Ruston when they set up an ice rink. I think I managed two go rounds. I blame it on the ill fitting ice skates though. I like your views that look out to the town. Looking forward to your explorations as you venture out.
